Project #103

The Ultimate Kid Dresser

There's just no substitute for this functional and fun idea. Labeling is a great idea for clothes and toys and teaches the basic idea of "a place for everything and everything in it's place!"

Material's and Tools Needed:

  • Furniture piece with canvas drawers or substitute found at any local home decor store. This one was found at Pier One (several years ago).
  • Acrylic paints in various colors (your choice)
  • Fabric medium
  • Paint brushes or fabric stamps
  • Your imagination

Step one: Take out all fabric drawers and make sure all is clean and ready to accept paint. You may wish to wash them first to get rid of any sizing on them.

Step two: Practice your design or lettering on a piece of paper to make sure you have the right size and dimensions to fit.  You only get one chance to make a mistake.

Step three: Mix fabric medium according to directions into acrylic paint. Start painting and let dry thoroughly.

Step Four: Heat set your design with a blow dryer. You may also want to wash it again to make sure it durable for cleaning. Assemble it back together.

NOTE: If you choose to do this project on a wooden dresser you do not need to add the fabric medium.  However, you will need to protect your masterpiece with a varathane or polyurethane coating. Apply at least 2-3 coats. All supplies for this project can be found at your local craft or paint store.

Try using the same concept for other pieces such as toy boxes, cubbies, pails, paint cans or armoires. Look through your child's clothes and coloring books for pictures or your computer for funky fonts.

The hardest part is getting your child to put things were they go! Words are great for teaching letters and spelling, but if your child is not ready for that just draw the picture of the item.  (See photos below.)
