Personalized Wall Hanging

Wall hangings make a great statement in any room. This one was made for a very special little girl using the colors of pink, white, and periwinkle blue.

Step one photo:

Material's and Tools Needed:

  • Fabric, we used 1/2 yard duck cotton canvas
Cut what ever size you wish depending on the style you are making.
  • Wooden dowel
  • Wooden end cap finials
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue guns and glue sticks
(or you may choose, like we did, to sew it.)
  • Paint brushes
  • Craft paints & Fabric medium paint
  • Polyurethane spray can, glossy
  • Ribbons, approx. 2 yards needed
  • Extras: beads, sequences, notions (ours came on a ribbon length.) We used beads and small satin flowers with pearl accents.

Step one: Prepare your fabric for painting by cutting it to size and sewing or hot gluing the ends over on each side. (see photo)

Step two: Paint all wooden pieces with craft paint. We used Delta Ceramcoat acrylic paint in Periwinkle Blue. Let dry and spray with polyurethane in gloss finish. Set aside until needed.

Step three: Paint your design on the canvas fabric using craft paint and fabric medium (Delta Ceramcoat Textile Medium). Mix according to the bottle directions. Here is where you can let your imagination run wild.  Pull out at least three colors to use from your theme. Any additional colors can be used as accents.

Paint Tip: To make it easier when painting on fabric you can water down your paint some or use a glaze so that it covers better. You can use stencils for designs, but we preferred the free hand method here.

  • Make it in various sizes and lengths. Or make several smaller ones to form a collection of hangings. Spell out a word or name. Then place them all on a longer wooden rod to fill a larger wall space.

  • Why not take it even further and add a pocket or two to store things or make it a growth chart to keep for years. Personalize it with names, initials or sayings.

  • Don't forget birthdays or holidays. They'll look forward to bringing it out every year!

  • To hang it up why not use a fancy hook or knob.

Step four:
Add your embellishments. Using two different beaded fringes, one in pink and a longer one in iridescent white, hot glue them on the back side. One over the other making sure the edging does not show from the front. (See photos at right.) --------->>>>>>>

Because this is a custom designed piece try to think beyond the normal. Sequences, buttons, or appliqués made from felt cut outs can be hot glued on to embellish your wall hanging. Place them all over or use them to outline something.

Step five: Measure your ribbon before cutting to find out how long you want to have it. Then tie the end onto the dowel allowing some to hang freely. Cut the ends off to form a nice edge. Then take another color piece to tie the bow on top.

To fancy it up! Tie an extra coordinating piece of ribbon on the piece hanging (see below).  Cinch up part of the white hanging piece and tie it off above the wooden dowel.  This will give the illusion of a perfectly tied bow.

Step Four Ideas:

Add beaded fringe on bottom

Add extras, here we used a flower
embellishment to dot the "i" in her name.

Here's another sample for girls.

Now your ready to hang their very own custom design wall art! A great accent in their own space. It's sure to become one of their favorite pieces of art.
